She sat opposite me, wearing spectacles and a shawl, she pulled the book from her bag. I couldn’t see the title of the book. As she opened the book I saw the first of the tentacles slowly stretch out. The woman yawned in appreciation of the tentacle and I could see she had no teeth, her empty mouth looked like a wet tobacco pouch, dark brown and sticky. She gazed at the open book and another tentacle released it’s way out of the page slowly moving towards her face. Her eyes fixed into the book and slowly they faded darker. As she slowly turned each page the book began to drip an oily liquid, splats fell onto her bronze buckled shoes all the while continually staring into the book. More tentacles came reaching out to her like skinny Medusa’s snakes. I lifted my feet onto the seat to avoid the oil getting on me, she sat zoned and serene. By now the book was a big slimy oily tentacle mess and yet she still just gazed into it, turning sticky page after sticky page with tentacles wrapped around her wrists and up her jacket sleeve. She then slowly took a deep breath and closed her eyes. The tentacles started to retract away back into the book and the oil reversed its way over everything until she was simply back to normal. She opened her eyes, stood up and walked away towards the park. I looked to my left to where my book was rested next to me. People born 1977 The Chinese Year of the Snake. I left it where it was and headed off home.

Fica bem Dave Pen.

  2. It looks like a picture of Naruto , you believe in Chinese astrology? Your text challenged me because I read “1977, the Year of the Snake”..And I was born this year..I believe in signs and I like the raven’s picture (on the roof) because I took the same photo when I was 14 and I feel to find her there..The question of today : will make old faster or find my 14 years..? LOL thanks for this morning thinking..Bernie.

  4. Hi Dave. Sam here in Brighton. Me and friend Andy saw Birdpen play a good few years ago in Southampton (soul cellar I think) my town of 10 years. We were blown away by your dark yet uplifting music. That night and I coined a great phrase for it which I cant remember right now. It echoed the words above about standing at the end of the world and smiling. Love that. We also had a chat down the Alex post that gig. I remember you were with the art curator lady, still together? Anyway how are you? Busy and creative as ever i am guessing, touring france et al? I read your wordpress blogs and look at your photos when they ping through. I am always impressed by your creative outlets which makes me reflect on my dormant mini creative energy. Anyhow to the point my good fellow. I recently re-discovered and played On/off/safety/danger and a couple of tracks and lyrics in particular resonated with me. Firstly, Off, the whole she-bang song. It is a beautifully spaced, energetic, crisp creation and to me heartfelt challenged lyrics. I played it to my 4 and half year old daughter in the car and she got it to a degree. This listening coincided with a mini semi free flow writing week within me and i’d like to share one of those off cuts for you to read, so her it is.
“Some truthful reflection and natural introspection, long time it took to come, stuck inside the barrel of my gun, some personal blind, we all have to know that without seeing so, less chance we have to feel our glorious rainbow. This golden morning I allowed to come, inside my vehicle mirrored by the spring sun, our daily decided work and dutiful ways we are tempted to shirk, walking strong and tall is our choice or a teeny mouse voice. One becomes one and two multipiles twice, four quadruples up to an octet of mice, freaking doolally down my channelled minds alley. Dr Seus and Sir Roald Dahl inspire my ridiculous follys, Dali et al surrealist visualised opinions give life to my miniscule minion”.
Off the cuff it twas be interesting to see what u think Dave. One last thing, your lyrics in Man on Fire got me and hit me, particularly, “You keep on drinking cos your hiding from your real side”. Feels like it could have written about me parts of it. I doff my cap to your and Mike’s efforts bringing the everyday creative to life. I thank you. Trust all is as good as can be and fair play to your mountain exploits Its great up there. x
